SAIL Art Afterschool Club 2024 Weeks 2 & 3

Week 2: We explored using pastels in new and creative ways, experimenting with both dry and wet techniques! We began by testing the pastels in their dry form, then experimented by applying water directly to them and by wetting the paper first. This allowed us to compare the effects and discover which technique we liked best. We also used tape to create interesting shapes and boundaries within our artwork. After initial experiments, each artist received a canvas to put their favorite techniques into practice. Using two different types of pastels, everyone had the freedom to draw or paint on their canvas, combining what they learned and exploring the techniques they enjoyed most!

Week 3: Everyone has settled into the routine of preparing together for class, including helping everyone put their aprons on! This week, we spread a long sheet of paper across the table and introduced an activity focused on rhythm and movement. Each child chose two markers and, as I played the drums, they walked around the table, drawing to the beat. Each child took turns directing the tempo, deciding if the beat would be fast or slow! Next, we brought out liquid watercolors to fill in the spaces between the marker lines. Each artist started with one color and then passed it along, making sure everyone got a chance to try every shade. At the end, we had a beautiful collaborative masterpiece. We divided the paper so each child could take home a piece of the collective artwork!

Looking forward to see what they create next!
